If the main concern you have is about privacy, then the most important thing is that it is tall enough and can't be seen through. You can go with a solid wall made of brick or stucco. Or, you can go with a fence that is made out of wood. Both of these can be built to be quite tall, so you don't have to worry about people seeing over them from the other side.
Are you looking for a way to block the wind?
If you have a gorgeous view around you but you would like to block the wind so you can truly enjoy your time out in the yard, then you may want to consider going with a glass wall. This is the perfect choice for people who live on a hill or at the beach, both of which tend to have gorgeous views and higher than normal wind speeds.
Do you want the utmost in security?
If you are mostly concerned with security, then not only will you want to go with a wall or fence that can't be seen through, but you may also want to consider going gateless. This means that the fence or wall will wrap around the entire area and there will be no gate for anyone to come through. Keep in mind, while this will prevent others from walking into your yard, it also means you will also be restricted from entering through the wall or fence in the same manner.
Do you want to keep your dog in or animals out?
If your major concern is to keep your dog in the yard or to prevent other animals from coming into your yard, then you can easily achieve this by going with a chain link fence. You can get a chain link fence that is quite tall, so you may even be able to prevent animals such as deer from easily getting into your yard. Keep in mind though, deer can clear fences less than 8 feet in some cases, so you do need to go quite tall if deer are a major concern.
